Ahhh college! What an interesting experience that was. I did not make any friends and I switched my major a billion times. Okay, maybe not a billion times but a lot of times. How about a list of degrees/careers I wanted to go for? Here it is:
- Recreational Therapy
- Occupational Therapy
- Speech Pathology (actually started the pre-professional program for this)
- Physician Assisting
- Social Work
- Drug and Alcohol Counselor
- Special Education Teacher
- Criminal Justice
Whew! I think that is it. Basically I did not know what I wanted to be when I grew up (still do not). I also wrongly assumed that I would make friends while in college or get a boyfriend. It is as if I thought that my weirdness would be accepted out of K-12th grade. Haha! So yeah, no friends and no boyfriend.
I ended up picking a major called Family Life and Child Development and that is what I got my four year degree in. I liked the idea of working with children starting in 11th grade and the degree requirements were not unreasonable to me so I just chose it.
Towards the end of my last semester of college I came across a master’s degree that interested me. It was called Applied Behavioral Analysis. This is a scientific discipline that is used to help children on the autism spectrum. I looked more into it and decided that I wanted to start an online master’s degree program right after graduating. So I started it and then ultimately got sick of it. Money wasted.
I am envious of people who knew what they wanted to do for a career and worked to make it happen. My struggle to find my place in this world continues.
